The culmination of years of training was on display Saturday by the women's cross country program as two runners broke Fredonia's school record in the 6,000-meter run. Running in the Inter-Regional Rumble at Oberlin College, Laura Morrison (Wethersfield, Conn. / Wethersfield) and Lauren Kotas (Lancaster, N.Y. / Lancaster) crossed the finish line faster than previous record holder, Kim Foltz (22:18) with times of 21:46 and 22:07, respectively. As a team, the Blue Devils finished fifth out of 29 teams competing, besting nationally-ranked Allegheny (No. 34) who finished sixth at the meet. Every runner set a personal best 6,000-meter performance on Saturday, including Bonnie Binggeli (Walworth, N.Y. / Gananda) who was just one second shy of the school record (22:19). She now stands as the fourth best finisher in Fredonia's 6,000-meter history. Two freshman, Hannah Kurbs (Lockport, N.Y. / Lockport) and Stephanie Wojnowski (Rochester, N.Y. / Eastridge) put their own names on Fredonia's record board on Saturday. Kurbs is now fifth, and Wojnowski seventh all-time, in the 6,000-meter run with finishes of 22:38 and 22:45, respectively. Junior Kara Hall (Bergen, N.Y. / Byron-Bergen) is now eighth place all-time (23:00) in the event. "The women took advantage of a very fast course and race. Most, if not all of the ladies had personal best 5k splits inside the 6k race. This shows strong racing abilities! The women will be ready to race again at SUNYAC's, where the number ten team in the Atlantic Region (Plattsburgh) will look to hold us off on their home course. I truly believe the lady Blue Devils have more to give". Coach Wilson After the women's cross country program had two runners break a Fredonia school record Saturday morning, the men's cross country team followed suit with two record-breakers of their own.
Kyle Collins (Suffern, N.Y. / Suffern) is Fredonia's new record-holder in the 8,000-meter run after his fifth-place finish of 24:22. Collin Mulcahy (Batavia, N.Y. / Batavia) also broke the school record on Saturday, crossing the finish line in 24:39 and moving into second on the all-time list. The previous record was set in 1979 by Bob Carroll (24:46). Merlin Joseph Jr. (Binghamton, N.Y. / Binghamton) was third of the Fredonia finishers with a time of 25:22 with Cody Martini (Palmyra, N.Y. / Palmyra-Macedon) one second behind in fourth place at 25:23. As a team, the Blue Devils finished ninth in the 32-team field. "The men simply followed suit with the conditions and competition. It was great to see our men race against out of region teams from the Great Lakes Region. Anytime you can beat a 36 year old school record, things are looking good! The men truly believe in their training, in one another and in themselves. I am very excited to see how SUNYAC's ends up". Coach Wilson This is the second installment of our new Featured Alumnus segment. Today we are highlighting Chelsea (Haag) Haylet.

The Blue Devils finished ninth in a field of 38 teams, many of which will return Nov. 14 to the same Letchworth State Park course for the NCAA Atlantic Regional. The Blue Devils are ranked No. 9 in the region. Collin Mulcahy (Batavia, N.Y.), a senior, was Fredonia's first finisher -- 24th overall -- in 25:34.2 for 8,000 meters. Next was senior Kyle Collins (Suffern, N.Y.), 35th overall in 25:42.6, followed by sophomore Merlin Joseph Jr. (Binghamton, N.Y.), junior Cody Martini (Palmyra, N.Y.), and Joe Northup (Waterloo, N.Y.). Fredonia's displacement runners were junior Bobby Cooper (Macedon, N.Y.) and sophomore Cyd Scott (Carmel, N.Y.). "This was are fastest team average of the season (26:11), when you can achieve your goals in such a large race, then that is a win for us! The men ran very strong for such a large race, Collin Mulcahy and Kyle Collins put themselves in very competitive positions early on and it paid off, Collin ran a personal best time and Kyle ran his third fastest college time (with only one shoe on). The team really pulled together for this meet, we have had some really tough workouts and are now ready for Oberlin." Coach Wilson Morrison and the Lady Blue Devils are on the rise. Laura Morrison (Wethersfield, Conn.) finished 19th in Saturday's Mike Woods Invitational hosted by SUNY Geneseo. A senior in her first season of collegiate cross country, Morrison continued the development which earned her Fredonia's first-ever SUNYAC Female Runner of the Week award with a 22:26.9 clocking for 6,000 meters on the Letchworth State Park course. It's the same course where the NCAA Atlantic Regional will be held Nov, 14. Saturday's race served as a pre-regional -- a chance for teams to run the course. The Blue Devils were 14th overall in the race, which drew 32 full teams and 453 runners. Including Morrison, Fredonia's scoring quintet consisted of freshman Hannah Kurbs (Lockport, N.Y.), junior Bonnie Binggeli (Walworth, N.Y.), freshmanStephanie Wojnowski (Rochester, N.Y.), and junior Julia Johnson (Baldwinsville, N.Y.). Fredonia's sixth and seventh runners were junior Kara Hall (Bergen, N.Y) and junior Alyssa Stroud (Allegany, N.Y.), respectively. "This was another strong race for this women's team. We did beat some teams that we needed to and it allowed us to see how strong the conference is. Laura Morrison is leading this team stronger every week, she is only eight seconds away from breaking the school record. Welcoming back Lauren Kotas this weekend at Oberlin will give our ladies the opportunity to run as a full squad. The results should be outstanding!" Coach Wilson For this version of our Featured Athlete segment, we will be featuring Kyle Collins, a senior distance runner. Read what Kyle has to say.
Q: Where are you from? A: Suffern, New York (West of New York City) Q: How long have you been competing? A: I started running cross country and track my freshman year of high school, so 7 years. Q: What attracted you to Fredonia? A: For someone whose home town is pretty far away, I was really impressed with Fredonia the first time I stepped on campus. The campus isn't the biggest, but because of that quality it has made it more convenient for me as both a student and as an athlete to get from place to place in a short period of time. Q: What are you studying? A: I am studying to become a mathematics high/middle school teacher, and to coach cross country and track & field at the high school level. Q: Explain your experience as a Blue Devil. A: My entire college experience here at Fredonia has probably been one of the best things that could have happened to me. Freshman year I was nervous about what my future would hold for me coming here, but as time went on, the friendships that I have created on and outside the team have helped me build my self-confidence. I now call Fredonia my second home. Q: What are your athletic and academic goals? A: My academic goals are to make the Dean's list for the remaining time that I am here. I want to push myself to earn a 4.0 GPA for the remanding semesters and give my teammates the best chance at an All-Academic title. Athletically, I want to make the All-SUNYAC team, All-Regional team and possibly run at NCAA’s in cross country. I also want to break 25 minutes in the 8K. For track, my goals are to win both the 5k and 3k titles at SUNYAC's and to break the school record in the 3k (8:21). If possible, I’d like to make NCAA’s in the 3k. The biggest goal that I have is helping my team win a SUNYAC title in cross country and track & field and to see everyone one of my teammates succeed and become the best athlete that they can be. Q: What are your future plans? A: I have another year here at Fredonia because of student teaching but after that, I don’t know for sure. For someone who is studying to be an educator, my path is unsure right now because I have the choice of grad school or finding a teaching job right after I graduate. But the future is unclear and really anything can happen. It all depends on what I do now that is the key to my future. Q: What is your favorite TV show? A: NCIS and The Big Bang Theory To see Kyle's progression through the years, click HERE. |
