GENEVA, Ohio -- Fredonia junior Rocky Caparro (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner) was the men's triple jump winner Saturday at The Spire Institute Team Challenge.

Caparro stretched the tape out to 13.71 meters -- 44.98 feet -- to top of field of 20 men and earn 10 team points. The Blue Devils had a total of 24 points overall and finished 10th in the strong 12-team field.

All the other Fredonia points came in field events. In the 35-pound weight throw, senior Kyle Brown (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) was third at 15.70 meters (51.50 feet) and senior Joseph Gabrielli (Depew, N.Y./Depew) was eighth at 13.42 meters (44.03 feet). Gabrielli was also fourth in the shot put at 13.86 meters (45.47 feet) while sophomore Trent Howard (Dewittville, N.Y./Chautauqua Lake) cleared 4.14 meters (13.58 feet) to finish seventh in the pole vault.

On the track, the Blue Devil runners were using this meet as a training meet. Most athletes competing in 2-3 events over the entire meet. Some strong efforts from (SR) Bobby Cooper (4:27.10) and (SO) Ethan Francis (4:29.90) in the mile will help ensure a strong performance at Bucknell.

Couperus, a junior, cleared 1.58 meters -- 5.18 feet -- to top a field of 12 high jumpers and earn 10 first-place points. That account for over a quarter of Fredonia's 36 team points, good for ninth in a field of 12 teams.

In addition to Couperus, two other Fredonia women earned individual points by finishing among the top eight in their respective field events. Mikayla Capestrani (Jamestown, N.Y./Jamestown), a junior, was sixth in the pole vault at 3.07 meters (10.07 feet). Naji McCallar (Buffalo, N.Y./Hutch Tech), a senior, was sixth in the shot put at 11.05 meters (36.25 feet).
