Kurbs wins Cortland 10,000 meters

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Hannah Kurbs won the women's 10,000 meters Saturday at the Cortland Classic Invitational track and field meet.

Kurbs's winning time of 39:02.29 was a personal best, one of six recorded by Fredonia women during the two-day meet at SUNY Cortland.

Other PR's:

Macy Brooks with 3,264 points in the heptathlon. The sophomore was third in the javelin (82 feet, 5 inches), fourth in the shot put (31 feet, 2 1/2 inches), and fifth in the 800 meters (2:40.52) among the other women's multi-event specialists.

Elana Davis in the 10,000 meters (42:21.55).

Maddie Sohl in the triple jump (36 feet, 4 3/4 inches). She finished fifth.

Sydney Preston in the 100-meter hurdles (18.59 seconds).

Serafin wins HJ / egan 3rd with pr steeplechase

​First place by Nick Serafin in the men's high jump was Fredonia's best finish at the Cortland Classic Invitational track and field meet Friday and Saturday.

Serafin's clearance of 6 feet, 6 inches tied his personal-best in the event.

Kyle Egan finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a personal-best of 10:27.24.

Fredonia's 4-by-400 relay team was third. The quartet consisted of Marcus Torres, Matthew Erman, Griffin Dombroske, and Alec Wright.

Gus Alvarez Jr. cleared 14 feet, 5 1.4 inch in the pole vault to finish fourth.

Ethan Francis also finished fourth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:07.65.

Other personal-bests:
  • Erman in the 800 meters (1:59.85);
  • Brian Freebern in the 800 meters (2:08.76) and the 1,500 ,meters (4:25.22);
  • Tony Gettino in the 800 meters (2:18.40) and the 1.500 meters (4:38.25);
  • Sean McGee in the discus (121 feet, 6 inches);
  • Michael Salvati in the 200 meters (23.11 seconds);
  • Torres in the 100 meters (11.64 seconds).

Kurbs, Serafin win Dave Labor events

​SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Fredonia women won two events Saturday at the Dave Labor Invitational outdoor track and field meet, hosted by Slippery Rock University.

Hannah Kurbs ran the 5,000 meters in 18:44.91, first among 34 women. Cassie Serafin won the triple jump with a measurement of 10.93 meters.

Maddie Sohl, had personal-best triple jump of 10.59 meters, good for fourth place behind her teammate. Emily Fish also had a personal-best in the 400 meters as did Morgan Ashton in the 400-meter hurdles.

Season-bests were recorded by Emily Maguire in the 800 meters and Abriel Andrews in the hammer throw.

​Improvement timed & measured at Slippery Rock

​Personal and seasonal bests were the order of the day for the Fredonia Blue Devil men at Slippery Rock University's Dave Labor Invitational outdoor track and field meet.

The biggest personal drop in time came from Matthew Erman in the 1,500 meters, a drop of 5.7 seconds to 4:16.13. The same race saw Aidan Pollard, Brian Freebern, and Tony Gettino run season-best time, with Pollard coming in at 4:15.05, fastest in the group.

Pollard was among three teammates to run personal-bests in the 800 meters. Kyle Campbell's 2:04.20 was the fastest in the group,, which also include Jeremy Erman.

The 4-by-400 meter relay quartet of Marcus Torres, Matt Erman, Griffin Dombroske, and Alec Wright combined for a season-best time of 3:26.11, fourth in the competition.

Nick Serafin and Derek Sunderland each cleared a season-best height in the high jump. Serafin's 1.92 meters tied for third place.

Macy - "Fredonia has a lot to offer. There is always something to do, and somewhere to explore, whether it’s walking around campus or going to the lake."

4. What things do you love about Fred?
Macy - "I love my teammates, they’re always pushing me to be the best multi I can be. Academically, there are tons of resources to help you succeed which is nice because it’s no secret that being a student-athlete can be challenging, but extremely worth it." 

5. Where do you see yourself after Fred?
Macy - "After Fredonia I feel confident that I’ll be more prepared to get a serious job and start a great life for myself. I would also love to travel!"

6. If you were given $1million, what would you do with it?
Macy - "If I were given $1 million, it wouldn’t mean a thing if I didn’t share it with all the people who made me the woman I am today. I would donate some to my high school, and to the Fredonia Track & Field Program, I would make sure my family is taken care of, lastly myself and the possible family I could have in the distant-future."

Serafin 1st in HJ, Cember has big discus PR

GENESEO, N.Y. – Nick Serafin tied for first in the high jump Saturday at the Geneseo Early Season Invitational outdoor track and field meet.

Serafin was one of four men to clear 1.89 meters (6 feet, 2 ¼ inches). He was successful in his first try at the height, which earned him the tie-breaker in determine the meet winner. Three of his four unsuccessful jumps came after the bar was set at 1.94 meters.

Showing the day's most improvement was Aaron Cember, with a discus throw of 36.15 meters (118 feet, 7 inches) – farther by 2.88 meters than his previous best. He finished 15th overall.

In other field events:

In a field of 17 triple jumpers, Dan Sudyn (13.37 meters) finished third and Griffin Dombroske (12.74 meters) was sixth.

In running events:

Fredonia finished second in the 4-by-400 meter relay. The quartet of Ivan Torres, Griffin Dombroske, Alec Wright, and Matthew Erman combined for 3:30.62, less than one second behind Geneseo.

Wright and Torres recorded personal-bests in the 200 meters. Wright (23.01 seconds) and Torres (23.10 seconds) lowered their times by .53 and .64 seconds, respectively. In addition, Torres finished ninth in the 400 meters in a field of 48 men with a time of 52.69 seconds.

Kyle Campbell (2:08.01) was the fastest of four Blue Devils in the 800 meters, while Erman (4:21.83) was the fastest of five in the 1,500 meters.

Ethan Francis finished ninth out of 73 runners in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:36.86.

​Brooks PRs twice, Kurbs wins Geneseo 10k

GENESEO, N.Y. – Macy Brooks had two personal-bests and nearly had a third on Saturday during the Geneseo Early Season Invitational outdoor track and field meet.

The sophomore multi-eventer ran a personal-best 17.78 seconds during preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles, lowering her time by .19 seconds and ninth fastest in the field, missing finals by one spot. She also had a PR of 21.96 meters in the javelin, an improvement of 2.96 meters.

Brooks's near PR came in the 200 meters with a time of 30.16 seconds, seven-hundredths short of her fastest.

In other running events:

Hannah Kurbs was the winner in a small field of the 10,000 meters. Her winning time was 40:50.6. Elena Davis was third in 43:04.37.

Competing in the 400-meter hurdles for the first time as a Blue Devil, freshman Morgan Ashton was fifth in a field of 13 women with a time of 1:11.45.
