YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Fredonia senior distance runner Merlin Joseph Jr. (Binghamton, N.Y.) finished second in the 3,000 meters at Friday's season-opening indoor track & field meet, the Youngstown State University Icebreaker. Joseph's time of 8:50.72 was a personal-record by 14 seconds. In a field of 21 runners, he finished only 1.3 seconds behind Duquense freshman Casey Conboy. The third-place finisher, Lorne Strausbaugh of Malone, was another 13 seconds back. In the 5,000 meters, junior Ethan Francis (Dunkirk, N.Y.) finished 11th in a field of 23 runners with a time of 15:33.73. Also, Michael Salvati (Avon, N.Y.) -- one of nine Blue Devil freshmen competing in their first college meet -- was clocked in 23.23 seconds in the 200 meters, 18th out of 51 sprinters. Other highlights: Mitchel Paciga (Jeffersonville, N.Y.), a senior, cleared 4.02 meters (13 feet, 2 1/4 inches) in the pole vault, a new personal-best. He finished 11th, two spots behind senior teammate Trent Howard (Dewittville, N.Y.), who cleared 4.17 meters (13 feet, 8 1/4 inches). In the shot put, sophomore Jordan Toland (Lockport, N.Y.) threw a personal-best 13.20 meters (43 feet, 3 3/4 inches). He was 15th overall, one spot behind senior Damone Brown (Haverstraw, N.Y.) and one ahead of freshman Jeremiah Chandler (Lockport, N.Y.). Fredonia women had noteworthy performances in four field events Friday at the Youngstown State Icebreaker, the first indoor track & field meet of the 2017-18 season.
Blue Devil senior Sarah Couperus (Marion, N.Y.) cleared 1.55 meters (5 feet, 1 inch) in the high jump, same as five other women -- including two from Cleveland State and one each from Robert Morris and from Duquesne, all NCAA Division III programs. They finished in a tie for fourth place in a field of 23 women. Couperus also finished 12th in a field of 23 in the triple jump with a distance of 10.39 meters (34 feet, 1 1/4 inch). In the pole vault, senior Kristen Sawyer (Lockport, N.Y.) cleared 3.40 meters (11 feet, 1 3/4 inches) to finish tied four fourth, while senior Naji McCallar (Buffalo, N.Y.) threw a personal-best 11.48 meters (37 feet, 8 inches) in the shot put, good for 11th place out of 45 throwers. Junior thrower Abriel Andrews (Syracuse, N.Y.) had Fredonia's other personal-best by a women other than a first-time freshmen or event newcomers with a toss of 12.34 meters (40 feet, 6 inches) in the 20-pound weight throw. She was 20th in a field of 33. It was the first collegiate meet for nine Blue Devil freshmen, plus one sophomore, many of whom to compete again next Friday and Saturday at the Kent State Golden Flash Gala. RESULTS |
