The Blue Devils will be splitting squads this weekend, competing at both the Boston University Terrier Invite and the Brockport Golden Eagle Invite.

At Boston, competition kicks off with a trio of freshman running the 400m. Brenna Culbreth, Ariel Davis and Sarah Buckley will get things going at 2:00pm. Next up, two time NCAA All American Brittany Feldman will look to hit a fast 200m time at 3:30pm. Feldman is entered at 25.19 seconds and is looking to get as close to that mark as possible. The middle distance duo of Emily Maguire and Stephanie Wojnowski will toe up in the women’s 1 mile run starting at 4:10pm. The freshman trio and Feldman will take the track once again in the 4x400m relay. The relays begin at 5:20pm. The four women will be looking to set a strong time for a better placement in the SUNYAC Championships. The women’s competition will wrap up with junior distance runner Hannah Kurbs looking to set a personal best (currently 18:41) in the 5000m run. Her race begins at 7:20pm.

The men will hit the track on day two.  Competition starts off at 11:40am with senior middle distance runner Mitch Loiacano in the 800m. Mitch will be looking to break that 2 minute barrier for the first time indoors. Next up will be the trio of 400m runners for the Blue Devils, Chase Towse, Mike DeLand and Ivan Torres will look to hit SUNYAC qualifying times this weekend. Freshman Mike Salvati will get his first chance to hit a fast 200m time on Boston’s banked track. Salvati ran 23.23 earlier at Youngstown State. The men’s 4x400 relay team will look to better their time from earlier in December (3:32) with Salvati, Torres, DeLand and Towse. Starting times for the relays are 4:25pm. The distance events will wrap up the Boston trip with senior Merlin Joseph and freshman Ryan Dunning in the 3000m run at 5:05pm. Both ran earlier at Youngstown State, Joseph in 8:50 and Dunning in 9:48. Both will be looking to better those times. The final event of the Boston trip will be the men’s 5000m run. Junior Ethan Francis and sophomore Aidan Pollard will take to the track and look to set personal best times. Currently, Francis has a PR of 15:12 and Pollard at 15:53. Both marks were set last outdoor season.

Blue Devils not competing at Boston will travel to the Brockport Golden Eagle Invite on Saturday, January 27th.

“This is a very exciting weekend for the Blue Devil programs. The atmosphere at Boston is top notch, and only can help our athletes compete at the top of their game. It’s early, so both of these meets are still a stepping stone in the right direction. I look forward to seeing the results from both meets this weekend”. Coach Wilson

CORTLAND, N.Y. - SUNY Fredonia's Ethan Francis (Dunkirk, N.Y. / Dunkirk) was named the Student Athlete of the Year by the SUNYAC for men's cross country on Thursday. The junior video production/political science major carries a 3.94 GPA during his career, including a 4.0 mark this past semester.  Francis finished seventh at the conference championship meet, a feat that placed him in the SUNYAC Cross Country Hall of Fame. Francis then went on to earn NCAA Atlantic All-Region honors.

"
Ethan has been a huge part of our distance programs," said head coach Tom Wilson. "He received Cross Country Hall of Fame recognition as a junior, is a two-time All Atlantic Regional finisher, and now Cross Country Student Athlete of the Year. He has been a pleasure to coach, a pleasure to watch develop, and I truly look forward to continuing to push him to achieve all his goals. I could not think of a better recipient for this award."

To be eligible for the SUNYAC Scholar Athlete of the Year award students must prove both academic and athletic excellence by obtaining a 3.30 overall GPA, by being a starter or significant reserve for their team, and they must be at least a sophomore.

Each season the State University of New York Athletic Conference honors Scholar Athletes of the Year not only for their effort on the field, but also for their effort in the classroom. Out of the hundreds of fall student-athletes that compete in the SUNYAC, seven were chosen for this special distinction.
