Sophomore Amanda Cocchiara has become one of our greatest success stories here at Fredonia State TFXC. After nearly three years fighting through many misdiagnosis's of some stomach and fainting problems that had hindered her performance our staff, in collaboration with the FSU Exercise Science Department, solved these long standing problems earlier this academic year, and, as a result, the impact was immediate. Amanda finished the women's XC season with the 4th fastest 6K time in school history and the 2013 indoor season with the 5th fastest 1,000m and 7th fastest mile times in FSU history. Now, nearly a year after she had to stop running completely for nearly 4 months Amanda Cocchiara is the FSU women's school record holder in the 3,000m steeplechase running a time of 11:44.97 this past Friday at Bucknell University's Bison Classic. This performance shatters the previous record of 11:52.87 set by Jessica Bennett in 2007. We are all very proud of Amanda! This is a very well deserved accomplishment and we look forward to watching her continue to progress this year and the years to come. Congratulations!
A remarkable success story in her own right, junior Anna Hourihan continued to drop her personal best in the women's 5,000m this past weekend running 18:03.08 last Friday, edging ever so closer to the women's record in the 5,000m of 17:23.46 set by former FSU great Jennifer McNerney.
Just a side note, Jennifer McNerney is the only FSU athlete to ever earn all-american honors in all three season's: cross country, indoor, and outdoor track and Field. McNerney accomplished this feat in the 1990-1991 academic year after finishing 7th in cross country, 5th in the indoor 5,000m, and 7th in both the outdoor 5,000m and 3,000m. If Hourihan were to break McNerney's 5,000m record, she may just find herself toeing the line in at the University of Wisconsin at Lacrosse for this years DIII NCAA Outdoor National Championships.
For the men, it was Freshman Collin Mulcahy that highlighted this weekend's action. Mulcahy ran lifetime personal bests winning his section last Friday in both the 1,500m in 3:58.30 and 800m in 1:56.87. While his former high school teammate, freshman Eric Williams won the 110m high hurdles on a cold, windy, and wet day at the Redhawk Open. Williams won with a time of 15.08 seconds, while training mate senior Carl Caughell finished 3rd in 15.40 seconds.
Next up for the Blue Devils is the Cortland Classic held April 19th-20th. First event will begin at 3 pm. This is a meet that in the past has features much of the SUNYAC schools giving the meet a Pre-SUNYAC Championship feel, so come on out and support the team!
