The weekend of January 24th we traveled to Boston University for the Terrier Classic. A meet that featured Olympian Galen Rupp and his breaking of the American Record in the 2 mile as well as 18 year old, prodigy Mary Cain nearly breaking the Youth World Record in the mile. Then this past weekend (Feb. 1st) we had the privilege of competing at Spire Institute, one of the US Olympic Training Centers located in Geneva, OH.
For early season competitions, myself and the rest of the coaching staff were ecstatic about the way our athletes made the most of these two competitions making an even stronger case of the fact that this may be the best compilation of athletes, both male and female, that this program has seen in more than a decade.
In those two weeks we have broken two school records with Sophomore Anna Dambacher shattering the indoor 400m record of 1:00.23 held by former All-American Sarah Hite with a time of 59.54. The other record breaking performance was by Kim Foltz in the women's 800m. The 800m record was freshly broken just last March by former teammate Leslie Beaton with a time of 2:19.59. Kim's new personal best is 2:18.18.
On the men's side we had spectacular performances all over highlighted by sophomore Eric Williams in the 60m hurdles, sophomore Collin Mulcahy in the mile, the varsity Distance Medley Relay (DMR), junior Chris Shartrand in the 5,000m, and sophomore Kyle Collins in the 3,000m. Eric and the DMR, made up of senior Steve Whittemore, junior JM Knapp, Collin, and junior Zakk Hess are both currently ranked in the top 15 in the nation.
Every athlete mentioned, male and female, have qualified for the ECAC championships that will be held this March at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, MA. A competition we are expecting to do very well in this year.
Also important to note is the recently released 2014 week two Atlantic Region rankings by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association. The rankings place both the men and the women in the regions top ten for the first time since the regional ranking began in 2010.
The men currently hold the sixth position while the women hold the nine spot. There are over 35 qualifying institutions in the Atlantic region.
Next up for both teams is the Golden Eagle Invite being held at Brockport this morning from 10 am into the evening. If your in the area stop by and see us!
It's A Great Time To Be A Blue Devil!
Sincerely,
Coach McQuality
