Several solid performances in season-opener

BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State men won one event and had several other solid performances Saturday while opening its 2019-20 indoor track and field season at Brockport's SERC.

The 4-by-200 relay team finished second but was placed first through disqualification. The quartet was made up of Tyler Pinnock, Dan Sudyn, Devin Eddy, and Jonah McGrath. They had a season-opening time of 1:37.44.

Aidan Pollard and Noah Watkins finished second and third in the 5,000 meters. Pollard's 15:36.84 was just over 12 seconds behind the winner. Watkins checked in at 16:03.98. Both times were collegiate personal-bests.

Brian Freebern was third of 13 runners in the mile. He was clocked in at 4:55.19.

Of the 26 men in the 400 meters, Alec Wright was sixth and Topher Elkins seventh.  Wright was timed in 52.02 seconds, one-tenth of a second head of Elkins in his collegiate debut. Those two and Griffin Dombroske qualified for the SUNYAC meet.

Collin Barmore finished second in his college track & field debut, coming in at 9:07.28 in the 3,000 meters. It was also a SUNYAC qualifying time.

Fredonia State's "A" 4-by-400 relay quartet finished a tight third in a clocking of 3:30.69, just .77 seconds short of hitting the tape first. Elkins, Dombroske, Toby Onuoha, and Marcus Torres made up the group. Fredonia State's "B" squad was fifth.

In field events, Onuoha had a strong showing in his collegiate debut in the high jump. He cleared 1.86 meters (6 feet, 1 ¼ inches) to finish third in a field of 13, including a post-grad jumper who won the event.

McGrath finished second in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.40 meters (14 feet, 5 ¼ inches) on his second try. The winner cleared the height on his first try. It was a regional qualifying mark for McGrath, who also fifth in the triple jump at 13.24 meters (43 feet, 5 ¼ inches).

Eddy was fourth in the long jump at 6.46 meters (21 feet, 2 ½ inches) in a field of 16 men.

The top finish by a Fredonia State runner was Sarah Buckley. Right behind was Morgan Ashton. They finished second and third, respectively, in the 800 meters. Buckley came in at 2:37.21, just under one second behind the winner. Ashton was clocked in 2:43 flat.

While only three teams were entered in the 4-by-400 meters, Fredonia State finished a close second behind NCAA Division II LeMoyne. The quartet of Buckley, Ashton, Ali Dixon, and Maddie Sohl was clocked in 4:36.31. LeMoyne won the race in 4:34.57.

Twelve women were entered in the high jump with freshman Trinity Tartaro and junior Cassie Serafin finishing second and third, respectively. Both women cleared 1.54 meters (5 feet, one-half inch) but Tartaro, in her first collegiate meet, did so on her first attempt. The height is a SUNYAC qualifier.

Sohl and Serafin were third and fifth, respectively, in the triple jump. Sohl measured out at 10.79 meters (35 feet, 4 ¾ inches). Serafin was two centimeters shorter at 10.77 (35 feet, 4 inches). Both jumps qualified the women for the All-Atlantic Region meet.

2019 Ruterbusch Run held on campus

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The 2019 Fred Ruterbusch Memorial 5K Run & Walk was held on campus last Saturday, October 12.

Two Fredonia State cross country runners, senior Aidan Pollard and sophomore Elena Davis, were the overall champs. Pollard was closed in 15:35 to lead the men home. Davis was the top female finisher in 20:30.

Age group champs were also crowned. Full results are linked to this page.

The race has become an annual memorial to the Blue Devils' first All-American in men's track and field. Ruterbusch, a 1978 Fredonia State graduate and a member of the Fredonia State Athletics Hall of Fame, specialized in the javelin and the shot put.

Devils sixth at Roberts Wesleyan

The Fredonia State men's cross country team finished sixth of 21 teams at the Harry F. Anderson Invitational at Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday. Aidan Pollard (Lindenhurst, N.Y. / Lindenhurst) was the top Devil, finishing 21st in a field of 252 runners. He ran the 8k course in 26:50.0.

The other Devils to score were:
Noah Watkins (Cortland, N.Y. / Cortland) (27:21.6, 33rd)
Anthony Ruiz (Dunkirk, N.Y. / Dunkirk) (27:29.6, 37th)
Collin Barmore (Gerry, N.Y. / Cassadaga Valley) (27:40.6, 40th)
Ryan Dunning (Syracuse, N.Y. / West Genesee) (27:46.9, 41st)

Displacement runners were Matthew Erman (East Meadow, N.Y. / East Meadow), who was 45th in a time of 27:55.6, and Kyle Campbell (Niagara Falls, N.Y. / Niagara Falls), who was 51st in a time of 28:03.9.

The Devils are off and running next weekend for the Mike Woods Invitational hosted by SUNY Geneseo.

Ashton top runner for Devils at Invite

Morgan Ashton (Whitesboro, N.Y. / Whitesboro) was the top Fredonia State finisher, running the women's 5k course at the Harry F. Anderson Invitational hosted by Roberts Wesleyan in a time of 21:14.4 on Saturday. She was in in 65th place in a field of 221 runners.

Three other Devils ran. MaryClaire Haseley (Lockport, N.Y. / Lockport) had a time of 21:34.1 and was 79th;  Elena Davis (Rochester, N.Y. / Irondequoit) finished in 21:53.0 and was 91st; and Elizabeth Ramsey (Webster, N.Y. / Webster SchroedeR) crossed the line at 23:17.1 and was 135th.

Invite opens Fredonia State home campaign

The first home event of Fredonia State's 2019-20 athletic year was held Saturday as three SUNYAC schools, including the Blue Devils, completed in the annual home cross country meet.

The Blue Devils' top finisher was senior Aidan Pollard, who toured the men's 6,000-meter course in 20:48.20. He was followed by two freshmen running in their first collegiate race. Anthony Ruiz was eighth overall and Collin Barmore 10th in 20:55.27 and 20:57.27, respectively. Fredonia State was second in the team standings.

Rounding out Fredonia State's scoring top five were Noah Watkins and Matthew Erman, with Kyle Campbell and Ryan Dunning the displacement finishers.

On the women's side, Elena Davis was 12th overall in 17:29.66 for 4,000 meters. Also scoring were MaryClaire Haseley, Morgan Ashton, Elizabeth Ramsey, and Sarah Buckley.

Cortland won both the men's and women's races. Oswego State also had full teams in both races, while Onondaga Community College had a full men's team. Runners from Mercyhurst North East also competed.

Serafin, Sunderland make SUNYAC HJ podium

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Fredonia was sixth of nine men's teams at the SUNYAC Outdoor Track and Field championship meet which concluded Saturday.

Nick Serafin had the best finish by a Blue Devil on Saturday. He was third in the high jump after clearing 1.90 meters (6 feet, 2 ¾ inches). He was joined on the podium by Derek Sunderland, who tied for sixth with a jump of 1.80 meters (5 feet, 10 ¾ inches).

Dan Sudyn was sixth and Jonah McGrath seventh in the triple jump, good for five points total. McGrath's 13.70 meters (44 feet, 11 ½ inches) was his personal-best.

Wright earned one point by finishing eighth in the 400 meters.

Marcus Torres, Griffin Dombroske, Matthew Erman, and Wright combined to finish sixth in the 4-by-400 meter relay, good for three team points.

The Blue Devils also sent out a 4-by-100 relay quartet of Torres, Wright, Dombroske, and Gus Alvarez Jr.

Kyle Egan participated in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Ethan Francis and Noah Watkins in the 5,000 meters, Aaron Cember in the shot put, and Cember and Sean McGee is the discus.

Fredonia earned 13 points Friday on the first day of the SUNYAC Outdoor Track & Field championship meet at The College at Brockport.


Jonah McGrath finished third and Gus Alvarez Jr. fifth, earning six and four points, respectively, in the men's pole vault. McGrath cleared 4.55 meters (14 feet, 11 inches) and Alvarez 4.40 meters (14 feet, 5 ¼ inches).

In addition, Alvarez Jr. threw the javelin 43.57 meters (142 feet, 11 inches) to finish sixth and earn three points.

Alec Wright has the eighth-fastest qualifying time in the 400 meters with a time of 50.73 seconds. The final is 1:25 p.m. Saturday. Wright also competed in the 200 meters.

​Kurbs sets school record in 10k at SUNYAC meet

Fredonia senior Hannah Kurbs ran a school record 37:55.74 to finish second in the women's 10,000 meters at Friday's SUNYAC Outdoor Track & Field championship meet.

Kurbs took the lead after the third of 25 laps and held it until four laps remained when she was overtaken by eventual winner Genny Corcoran of Geneseo. 
Both women plus the next five finishers ran below the qualifying time for All-Atlantic Regional Track Conference meet May 15 and May 16.

The school record by Kurbs eclipsed Sarah Furman's 38:06.26 set in May of 2010. It was also an improvement on Kurbs's 39:02.29 last month at the Cortland Classic. 

She earned eight of Fredonia's 12 points, with Cassie Serafin earning three and Maddie Sohl. Serafin finished sixth and Sohl eighth in the long jump with distances of 5.26 meters (17 feet, 3 ¼ inches) and 5.21 meters (17 feet, 1 ¼ inches), respectively.

Macy Brooks earned 1,849 points in the first four events of the women's heptathlon. Her shot put of 9.13 meters was third best among the nine multi-athletes in the event.

Other Fredonia women competing Friday were Ayana Bursie in the 100 meters; Sarah Buckley in the 400 meters; Emily Maguire and Emily Fish in the 800 meters; Morgan Ashton in the 400-meter hurdles; Elena Davis in the 10,000 meters;  Kayla Murray in the pole vault; and Abriel Andrews in the hammer throw

Cassie Serafin won the women's long jump and moved to No. 19 on the NCAA Division III qualifying list during the St. John Fisher Cardinal Classic outdoor track and field meet.l

Serafin's jump of 5.56 meters -- 18 feet, 3 inches -- also moved her up to No. 3 on Fredonia's all-time Top 10 list in the women's outdoor long jump

Kurbs wins Cortland 10,000 meters

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Hannah Kurbs won the women's 10,000 meters Saturday at the Cortland Classic Invitational track and field meet.

Kurbs's winning time of 39:02.29 was a personal best, one of six recorded by Fredonia women during the two-day meet at SUNY Cortland.

Other PR's:

Macy Brooks with 3,264 points in the heptathlon. The sophomore was third in the javelin (82 feet, 5 inches), fourth in the shot put (31 feet, 2 1/2 inches), and fifth in the 800 meters (2:40.52) among the other women's multi-event specialists.

Elana Davis in the 10,000 meters (42:21.55).

Maddie Sohl in the triple jump (36 feet, 4 3/4 inches). She finished fifth.

Sydney Preston in the 100-meter hurdles (18.59 seconds).

Serafin wins HJ / egan 3rd with pr steeplechase

​First place by Nick Serafin in the men's high jump was Fredonia's best finish at the Cortland Classic Invitational track and field meet Friday and Saturday.

Serafin's clearance of 6 feet, 6 inches tied his personal-best in the event.

Kyle Egan finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a personal-best of 10:27.24.

Fredonia's 4-by-400 relay team was third. The quartet consisted of Marcus Torres, Matthew Erman, Griffin Dombroske, and Alec Wright.

Gus Alvarez Jr. cleared 14 feet, 5 1.4 inch in the pole vault to finish fourth.

Ethan Francis also finished fourth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:07.65.

Other personal-bests:
  • Erman in the 800 meters (1:59.85);
  • Brian Freebern in the 800 meters (2:08.76) and the 1,500 ,meters (4:25.22);

Kurbs, Serafin win Dave Labor events

​SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Fredonia women won two events Saturday at the Dave Labor Invitational outdoor track and field meet, hosted by Slippery Rock University.

Hannah Kurbs ran the 5,000 meters in 18:44.91, first among 34 women. Cassie Serafin won the triple jump with a measurement of 10.93 meters.

Maddie Sohl, had personal-best triple jump of 10.59 meters, good for fourth place behind her teammate. Emily Fish also had a personal-best in the 400 meters as did Morgan Ashton in the 400-meter hurdles.

Season-bests were recorded by Emily Maguire in the 800 meters and Abriel Andrews in the hammer throw.

​Improvement timed & measured at Slippery Rock

​Personal and seasonal bests were the order of the day for the Fredonia Blue Devil men at Slippery Rock University's Dave Labor Invitational outdoor track and field meet.

The biggest personal drop in time came from Matthew Erman in the 1,500 meters, a drop of 5.7 seconds to 4:16.13. The same race saw Aidan Pollard, Brian Freebern, and Tony Gettino run season-best time, with Pollard coming in at 4:15.05, fastest in the group.

Pollard was among three teammates to run personal-bests in the 800 meters. Kyle Campbell's 2:04.20 was the fastest in the group,, which also include Jeremy Erman.

The 4-by-400 meter relay quartet of Marcus Torres, Matt Erman, Griffin Dombroske, and Alec Wright combined for a season-best time of 3:26.11, fourth in the competition.

Nick Serafin and Derek Sunderland each cleared a season-best height in the high jump. Serafin's 1.92 meters tied for third place.

Macy - "Fredonia has a lot to offer. There is always something to do, and somewhere to explore, whether it’s walking around campus or going to the lake."

Macy - "I love my teammates, they’re always pushing me to be the best multi I can be. Academically, there are tons of resources to help you succeed which is nice because it’s no secret that being a student-athlete can be challenging, but extremely worth it." 

5. Where do you see yourself after Fred?
Macy - "After Fredonia I feel confident that I’ll be more prepared to get a serious job and start a great life for myself. I would also love to travel!"

6. If you were given $1million, what would you do with it?
Macy - "If I were given $1 million, it wouldn’t mean a thing if I didn’t share it with all the people who made me the woman I am today. I would donate some to my high school, and to the Fredonia Track & Field Program, I would make sure my family is taken care of, lastly myself and the possible family I could have in the distant-future."

Serafin 1st in HJ, Cember has big discus PR

GENESEO, N.Y. – Nick Serafin tied for first in the high jump Saturday at the Geneseo Early Season Invitational outdoor track and field meet.

Serafin was one of four men to clear 1.89 meters (6 feet, 2 ¼ inches). He was successful in his first try at the height, which earned him the tie-breaker in determine the meet winner. Three of his four unsuccessful jumps came after the bar was set at 1.94 meters.

Showing the day's most improvement was Aaron Cember, with a discus throw of 36.15 meters (118 feet, 7 inches) – farther by 2.88 meters than his previous best. He finished 15th overall.

In other field events:

In a field of 17 triple jumpers, Dan Sudyn (13.37 meters) finished third and Griffin Dombroske (12.74 meters) was sixth.

In running events:

Fredonia finished second in the 4-by-400 meter relay. The quartet of Ivan Torres, Griffin Dombroske, Alec Wright, and Matthew Erman combined for 3:30.62, less than one second behind Geneseo.

Wright and Torres recorded personal-bests in the 200 meters. Wright (23.01 seconds) and Torres (23.10 seconds) lowered their times by .53 and .64 seconds, respectively. In addition, Torres finished ninth in the 400 meters in a field of 48 men with a time of 52.69 seconds.

Kyle Campbell (2:08.01) was the fastest of four Blue Devils in the 800 meters, while Erman (4:21.83) was the fastest of five in the 1,500 meters.

Ethan Francis finished ninth out of 73 runners in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:36.86.

​Brooks PRs twice, Kurbs wins Geneseo 10k

GENESEO, N.Y. – Macy Brooks had two personal-bests and nearly had a third on Saturday during the Geneseo Early Season Invitational outdoor track and field meet.

The sophomore multi-eventer ran a personal-best 17.78 seconds during preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles, lowering her time by .19 seconds and ninth fastest in the field, missing finals by one spot. She also had a PR of 21.96 meters in the javelin, an improvement of 2.96 meters.

Brooks's near PR came in the 200 meters with a time of 30.16 seconds, seven-hundredths short of her fastest.

In other running events:

Hannah Kurbs was the winner in a small field of the 10,000 meters. Her winning time was 40:50.6. Elena Davis was third in 43:04.37.

Competing in the 400-meter hurdles for the first time as a Blue Devil, freshman Morgan Ashton was fifth in a field of 13 women with a time of 1:11.45.

Gus - "There were a few factors that brought me to Fred, such as, being on my own learning how to be independent, track of course and also the people on campus. Everyone on campus are very nice and don’t cause any type of trouble and mind their own business"

Gus - "There are too many things to choose from"

Gus - "After Fred I see myself having a good stable job with a home and family"
