The Fredonia State men's cross country team was voted seventh in the Niagara Region pre-season poll. The team is coached by Tom Wilson, who enters his 11th season for the Blue Devils. Both the men and women open up Saturday, September 4 at the Fredonia State Invitational held on campus. The men take off at 10:30 am, followed by the women's meet scheduled for an 11:15 am start.

Barmore wins SUNYAC 800CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Fredonia State sophomore Collin Barmore finished first in the men's 800 meters Saturday at the SUNYAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship meet at SUNY Cortland. Barmore crossed the finish line in 1:54.82 to finish just over a half-second ahead of Brockport's Marius Sidlaukus and nearly two seconds ahead of Geneseo's Ezra Ruggles. All three men qualified for the NCAA Atlantic Regional. Barmore's time was a new lift time best by over two seconds. Barmore and three teammates also qualified for the Regional in the 4x400 meter relay. TyeRyan Burke and Topher Elkins had the first two legs, Barmore the third, and Toby Onuoha anchored a 3:26.68 clocking, good for second place in the event. The quartet of Elkins, Onuoha, Tyler Miller, and Burke finished third in the 4x100 relay in 44.98 seconds. Onuoha finished third in the high jump. He was one of four men to clear 1.85 meters (6 feet, 3/4 inch) and was placed third based on number of misses. Onuoha also finished seventh in the triple jump at 12.86 meters (42 feet, 2 1/4 inches) and eighth in the 200 meters. Also Saturday, Burke was seventh in the 400 meters (50.61), Aaron Cember was seventh in the shot put and ninth in the discus, and Anthony Ruiz was 10th in the 5,000 meters. The Blue Devils finished fourth in the 10-team standings. Geneseo won the team championship. Fredonia State's Eleanor Clarke finished second in the javelin and earned Second Team All SUNYAC status on the first day of the SUNYAC Outdoor Track and Field championship meet at SUNY Cortland. Seeded No. 3 coming into the meet, Clarke threw 32.54 meters (106 feet, 9 inches), two meters farther than her previous-best throw this season. She earned eight points for her team and currently sits second all time in Fredonia State history. In other Friday competition, Evelyn Smith qualified for Saturday's final in the 400 meters with a preliminary time of 1:03.94. She is the No. 7 seed heading into the final at 2:50 p.m. Saturday. Meanwhile, Sarah Buckley (1:04.75) finished ninth during prelims, one spot out of Saturday's final. In the 400 meters hurdles, Morgan Ashton (1:10.11) was eighth during Friday's prelims to advance Saturday's 4:25 p.m. final. She came into the meet as the No. 9 seed. Her teammate, Alissa Dixon (1:15.55), failed to advance to the final. CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Fredonia State senior MaryClaire Haseley finished sixth in the women's 5,000 meters during Day 2 of the SUNYAC Track and Field Championship Meet at SUNY Cortland.
Haseley was clocked in 19:26.13, an improvement of nearly eight seconds from her previous-best time this season. She also moved up four spots from her pre-meet seed and one point for her team. They finished seventh in the team standings. Geneseo won the team championship. In other events Saturday, Evelyn Smith was eighth in the 400 meters, Morgan Ashton eighth in the 400-meter hurdles, Eleanor Clarke finished 10th in the discus, and the quartet of Smith, Ali Dixon, Vanessa Ryhal, and Ashton seventh in the 4x400 relay. Five-time national champ Nick Guarino has been named SUNYAC Men's Track & Field Athlete of the Decade today, joined on the All-Decade Team by three other Blue Devils.
A 2011 graduate, Guarino won two indoor and three outdoor titles his junior and senior years, including a rare double at the 2011 outdoor meet. He has been selected as Athlete of the Decade in a vote of conference sports information directors. Also chosen by the SIDs as All-Decade Team recipients are Spencer Lefort, Collin Mulcahy, and Broncho Rollins. All three were earned All-America status as Blue Devils. A two-time NCAA Division III All-America in the 400 meters, Feldman graduated as the school record-holder in the 400 meters both indoors and outdoors. She also held school indoor records in the 300 meters, 400 meters, and 500 meters indoors and was part of both 4-by-400 meter school-record relays, plus the indoor distance medley relay. Her name also appears on the Top 10 lists in seven other events. Hailing from Jamestown, N.Y., and a graduate of Southwestern High School, Feldman broke onto the scene during her freshman year. At her first SUNYAC meet, the 2015 indoor championships, she earned team points by finished sixth in the high jump and seventh in the 400. That prompted Head Coach Tom Wilson to make a bold prediction. "Brittany is just starting out," Wilson said. "She will have a number of records and conference titles under her belt by the end of her career." By the time she graduated in 2018, she had won three conference individual titles and finished second three other times. She also was part of Fredonia State's historic 4-by-400 victory at the 2015 SUNYAC outdoor championship meet. Teamed with Anna Dambacher, Kim Foltz, and Laura Morrison, Feldman and the others became the first Blue Devil quartet to win the SUNYAC relay championship. In to her six all-conference individual titles and the relay win, Feldman earned three all-region awards from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, plus the two All-America certificates in the 400, finishing seventh at both the 2016 indoor and 2017 outdoor national meets. Scholastically, the native of Jamestown, N.Y., and Southwestern High School was named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team. The men's 4-by-400 meter relay team finished sixth of nine teams with a time of 3:23.76. The quartet was comprised of junior Marcus Torres, freshman Toby Onuoha, freshman Will Guagliardo, and sophomore Griffin Dombroske In the men's triple jump, junior Dan Sudyn finished 10th at 13.27 meters (43 feet, 6 1/2 inches). In the women's triple jump, junior Cassie Serafin was 11th and sophomore Maddie Sohl 27th. Serafin measured out at 11.08 meters (36' 4 1/4") and Sohl at 10.35 meters (33', 11 1/2"). Saturday: One-thousandths of one second separated Fredonia State freshman Collin Barmore from Rowan's Joe DeVito in the men's 800 meters. Running in the fourth heat, Barmore ran a personal-best 1:56.40 -- rounded up from 1:56.397. DeVito ran in the third heat and was clocked in 1:56.398. Barmore was placed sixth, DeVito seventh. Barmore's seed time -- and previous personal-best -- was 1:57.16. In the men's 400 meters, freshmen Toby Onuoha ran 52.39 seconds and Will Guarliardo was disqualified. In the women's long, junior Cassie Serafin finished 14th with a measurement of 5.17 meters (16/ 11 1/2") Dan Sudyn, a junior, finished sixth in the men's triple jump. His best jump of the day, 13.67 meters (44 ft., 10 1/4 in.) came on his sixth and final attempt. He earned three points for his team en route their fifth-place standing after five of 17 events. The meet resumes Saturday morning.
A pair of freshmen qualified for Saturday finals in their respective events. Collin Barmore ran the third-fastest qualifying 800-meter time of preliminaries. His 1:57.63 was .31 of one second out of the top spot. Will Guagliardo qualified for the men's 400-meter final with a preliminary time of 51.57 seconds, eighth-best on Friday. The Blue Devils finished fifth in the distance medley relay. The quartet of senior Kyle Egan, freshman Topher Elkins, junior Matthew Erman, and Barmore combined for 10:52.98. They picked up two places in the last 1,600 meters. Other Blue Devil men: junior Marcus Torres ran 51.72 seconds in the 400 meters, .15 of one second short of qualifying for finals … senior Aidan Pollard was 10th (15:49.79) and junior Noah Watkins 15th (16:15.58) in the 5,000 meters ... freshman Toby Onuoha was ninth (13.40 m. / 43 ft., 11 3/4 in.), sophomore Griffin Dombroske 11th (13.09 m. / 42 ft., 11 1/2 in.) 11th, and sophomore Roan Baxter-Martin 17th (12.50 m. / 41 ft., 0 1/4 in.) in the men's triple jump. The meet ended with a third-place finish in the 4-by-400 meter relay. The quartet of junior Marcus Torres, freshman Toby Onuoha, freshman Will Guagliardo, and sophomore Griffin Dombroske was timed in 3:24.18. While it was also an All-Atlantic Regional qualifying time, it was not as fast as the team's 3:22.12 earlier this month at a meet in Boston. The top individual finisher Saturday was freshman Collin Barmore, fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 1:59.08. Barmore employed a come-from-behind style, moving from eighth to fourth place in the third 200-meter leg. He earned five team points. Other point-scorers included Guagliardo, seventh in the 400 meters with a time of 52.12 seconds. Earning one-third of a point was Onuoha, who tied for eighth in the high jump. He cleared 1.80 meters (5' 10 ½"). Other Blue Devil participants Saturday: junior Aaron Cember threw 13.50 meters (44' 3 ½") in the 35-pound weight throw; senior Aidan Pollard ran 9:08.95 in the 3,000 meters; freshman Devin Eddy covered 6.25 meters (20' 6 ¼") in the long jump. The Blue Devils finished seventh in the team standings. They were outpointed by Buffalo State, which earned the two Lake Erie Cup points in the all-sport series between the Western New York rivals. During Friday's session, junior Roan Baxter-Martin recorded a personal-best in the triple jump (12.50 m.). It erased a mark he set earlier this month at Utica College. The day's top finisher was junior Cassie Serafin in the women's triple jump. On her third of six attempts, Serafin measured out at 11.43 meters (37 feet, 6 inches), good for second place. She finished behind only Brockport's Chanyce Powell, who soared 11.82 meters. Fredonia State sophomore Maddie Sohl finished eighth with a jump of 10.62 meters (34 feet, 10 ½ inches). The distance medley relay team of sophomore Morgan Ashton, junior Sarah Buckley, sophomore Emily Fish, and junior MaryClaire Haseley finished fourth in 13:28.13, edged by Brockport by just over one second. Other Blue Devil women: Sohl also competed in the women's 60-meter hurdles (:10.68) … Buckley ran a heat of the women's 400 meters (1:02.97) … neither Sohl or Buckley qualified for finals Saturday … freshman Trinity Tartaro (10.26 m. / 33 ft., 8 in.) was 11th and sophomore Sydney Preston (9.74 m. / 31 ft., 11 ½ in.) was 16th in the women's triple jump … Ashton ran 2:26.62 in the 800-meter final … junior Macy Brooks threw the shot put 10.26 meters (33 ft., 8 in.). Cassie Serafin had her second podium finish in as many events with a sixth-place in the long jump. The junior's 5.28 meters (17' 4") represented an indoor personal-best, an improvement by 3 ¼ inches over her previous-best of 5.20 meters last month. Serafin finished second Friday in the triple jump – thereby becoming Second Team All SUNYAC. Serafin earned three points Saturday after earning eight on Friday. She was unable to add to her total in her final event of the meet, the high jump, tying for 11th after clearing 1.47 meters (4' 9 ¾"). Trinity Tartaro, a freshman, also competed in the high jump. Fredonia's other individual competitor Saturday was junior MaryClaire Haseley. She completed 3,000 meters in 11:51.35. In the 4-by-400 relay, the quartet of Sarah Buckley, Emily Fish, Morgan Ashton, Ali Dixon combined for 4:10.99. The Blue Devils finished eighth in the team standings. BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State men won one event and had several other solid performances Saturday while opening its 2019-20 indoor track and field season at Brockport's SERC. The 4-by-200 relay team finished second but was placed first through disqualification. The quartet was made up of Tyler Pinnock, Dan Sudyn, Devin Eddy, and Jonah McGrath. They had a season-opening time of 1:37.44. Aidan Pollard and Noah Watkins finished second and third in the 5,000 meters. Pollard's 15:36.84 was just over 12 seconds behind the winner. Watkins checked in at 16:03.98. Both times were collegiate personal-bests. Brian Freebern was third of 13 runners in the mile. He was clocked in at 4:55.19. Of the 26 men in the 400 meters, Alec Wright was sixth and Topher Elkins seventh. Wright was timed in 52.02 seconds, one-tenth of a second head of Elkins in his collegiate debut. Those two and Griffin Dombroske qualified for the SUNYAC meet. Collin Barmore finished second in his college track & field debut, coming in at 9:07.28 in the 3,000 meters. It was also a SUNYAC qualifying time. Fredonia State's "A" 4-by-400 relay quartet finished a tight third in a clocking of 3:30.69, just .77 seconds short of hitting the tape first. Elkins, Dombroske, Toby Onuoha, and Marcus Torres made up the group. Fredonia State's "B" squad was fifth. In field events, Onuoha had a strong showing in his collegiate debut in the high jump. He cleared 1.86 meters (6 feet, 1 ¼ inches) to finish third in a field of 13, including a post-grad jumper who won the event. McGrath finished second in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.40 meters (14 feet, 5 ¼ inches) on his second try. The winner cleared the height on his first try. It was a regional qualifying mark for McGrath, who also fifth in the triple jump at 13.24 meters (43 feet, 5 ¼ inches). Eddy was fourth in the long jump at 6.46 meters (21 feet, 2 ½ inches) in a field of 16 men. The top finish by a Fredonia State runner was Sarah Buckley. Right behind was Morgan Ashton. They finished second and third, respectively, in the 800 meters. Buckley came in at 2:37.21, just under one second behind the winner. Ashton was clocked in 2:43 flat.
While only three teams were entered in the 4-by-400 meters, Fredonia State finished a close second behind NCAA Division II LeMoyne. The quartet of Buckley, Ashton, Ali Dixon, and Maddie Sohl was clocked in 4:36.31. LeMoyne won the race in 4:34.57. Twelve women were entered in the high jump with freshman Trinity Tartaro and junior Cassie Serafin finishing second and third, respectively. Both women cleared 1.54 meters (5 feet, one-half inch) but Tartaro, in her first collegiate meet, did so on her first attempt. The height is a SUNYAC qualifier. Sohl and Serafin were third and fifth, respectively, in the triple jump. Sohl measured out at 10.79 meters (35 feet, 4 ¾ inches). Serafin was two centimeters shorter at 10.77 (35 feet, 4 inches). Both jumps qualified the women for the All-Atlantic Region meet. FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The 2019 Fred Ruterbusch Memorial 5K Run & Walk was held on campus last Saturday, October 12.
Two Fredonia State cross country runners, senior Aidan Pollard and sophomore Elena Davis, were the overall champs. Pollard was closed in 15:35 to lead the men home. Davis was the top female finisher in 20:30. Age group champs were also crowned. Full results are linked to this page. The race has become an annual memorial to the Blue Devils' first All-American in men's track and field. Ruterbusch, a 1978 Fredonia State graduate and a member of the Fredonia State Athletics Hall of Fame, specialized in the javelin and the shot put. Aidan Pollard (Lindenhurst, N.Y. / Lindenhurst) was the top Devil, finishing 21st in a field of 252 runners. He ran the 8k course in 26:50.0. The other Devils to score were: Noah Watkins (Cortland, N.Y. / Cortland) (27:21.6, 33rd) Anthony Ruiz (Dunkirk, N.Y. / Dunkirk) (27:29.6, 37th) Collin Barmore (Gerry, N.Y. / Cassadaga Valley) (27:40.6, 40th) Ryan Dunning (Syracuse, N.Y. / West Genesee) (27:46.9, 41st) Displacement runners were Matthew Erman (East Meadow, N.Y. / East Meadow), who was 45th in a time of 27:55.6, and Kyle Campbell (Niagara Falls, N.Y. / Niagara Falls), who was 51st in a time of 28:03.9. The Devils are off and running next weekend for the Mike Woods Invitational hosted by SUNY Geneseo. Ashton top runner for Devils at InviteMorgan Ashton (Whitesboro, N.Y. / Whitesboro) was the top Fredonia State finisher, running the women's 5k course at the Harry F. Anderson Invitational hosted by Roberts Wesleyan in a time of 21:14.4 on Saturday. She was in in 65th place in a field of 221 runners.
Three other Devils ran. MaryClaire Haseley (Lockport, N.Y. / Lockport) had a time of 21:34.1 and was 79th; Elena Davis (Rochester, N.Y. / Irondequoit) finished in 21:53.0 and was 91st; and Elizabeth Ramsey (Webster, N.Y. / Webster SchroedeR) crossed the line at 23:17.1 and was 135th. The first home event of Fredonia State's 2019-20 athletic year was held Saturday as three SUNYAC schools, including the Blue Devils, completed in the annual home cross country meet. The Blue Devils' top finisher was senior Aidan Pollard, who toured the men's 6,000-meter course in 20:48.20. He was followed by two freshmen running in their first collegiate race. Anthony Ruiz was eighth overall and Collin Barmore 10th in 20:55.27 and 20:57.27, respectively. Fredonia State was second in the team standings. Rounding out Fredonia State's scoring top five were Noah Watkins and Matthew Erman, with Kyle Campbell and Ryan Dunning the displacement finishers. On the women's side, Elena Davis was 12th overall in 17:29.66 for 4,000 meters. Also scoring were MaryClaire Haseley, Morgan Ashton, Elizabeth Ramsey, and Sarah Buckley.
Cortland won both the men's and women's races. Oswego State also had full teams in both races, while Onondaga Community College had a full men's team. Runners from Mercyhurst North East also competed. |
