Prior to the start of winter break the Blue Devils followed up a fantastic opening performance at Kent State University with an arguably better overall performance on a short week at RIT's Early Invitational walking away with 39 SUNYAC qualifying performances, eight first place finishers, seven FSU top ten list performances, five ECAC Qualifying performances, and a new FSU School Record!
Breaking said school record was Anna Dambacher yet again. For the second straight week Anna rewrote the record books shattering her own 60m dash school record of 8.13 seconds with a winning time of 8.02 seconds. For you high school folks 8.02 seconds is equivalent to 7.40 seconds in the 55m dash. Anna's performance also qualifies her for both the SUNYAC Conference Championships being held at Brockport State College and the 2014 Indoor ECAC Championships being held at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, Mass. Anna also won the 200m, rather handily, in a time of 26.63 seconds. The next fastest runner was Morgan Mastin of St. John Fisher in 27.19.
Also having stand out performances for the women were senior Emily Cummiskey and sophomore Kayleigh Wasielewski. Emily qualified for the Indoor ECAC Championships for the fourth straight year when she jumped the exactly the qualifying standard of 5.15m or 16'10.5" in the long jump. Kayliegh won her first collegiate competition of her career at RIT with a win in the high jump. The win came on misses with a jump of 1.55m or 5'1" over St. John Fisher's Lisa Knab.
Competing in his first meet of the year, sophomore Eric Williams stole the show for the men with his performances in the 60m high hurdles, 60m dash, and pole vault. Eric started things off running what is currently the 8th fastest time in NCAA Division III when he won the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.40 seconds (equivalent to 7.75 in the 55m hurdles). Eric then ran the fastest time of the day and 4th fastest 60m dash time in FSU history with a time of 7.15 seconds (equivalent to 6.60 second in the 55m dash), although didn't run in finals due to a conflict with the pole vault. And speaking of pole vault, Eric won this event as well, but just barely, winning on misses over teammate Ben Goebel with the duo both jumping of 4.25m or 13'11". What this competition rather remarkable was that it was Eric's first pole vault competition of his collegiate career, in which he bested his high school personal best by a foot and five inches from 2012.
Others with stand out performances on the men's side were sophomore Brian Ogilvie, senior Alex Brennan, and freshman Joe Gabrielli. Brian placed fourth in the 60m dash with a time of 7.27 (equivalent to 6.72 in the 55m dash), the 10th best performance in school history in that event. Alex placed third in the long jump with a personal best of 6.74m or 22'1". A performance that earns Alex his first trip to the Indoor ECAC Championships. Joe, in his first ever collegiate competition, walks away with a solid performance and win in the men's shot put with a throw of 13.33m or 43'9".
Athletes return from break on January 12th and will compete for the first time in 2014 back at RIT for the Tiger Invitational on Saturday, January 18th followed by the Terrier Classic held at Boston University in Boston, Mass. held on January 24 and 25th.
Stay tuned for results and analysis!
IT'S A GREAT TIME TO BE A BLUE DEVIL!
